750 looted archaeological artifacts return to Italy from Robin Symes network
After a 17-year negotiation, 750 archaeological artifacts illegally excavated and trafficked by the network of British dealer Robin Symes have been repatriated to Italy. The objects—including vases, statues, tools, sarcophagi, jewelry, and 26 reassembled necklaces—were part of a larger cache of 800 items looted from Italian sites. The recovery stems from a 2016 raid in Geneva where 45 crates containing 7,000 artifacts stolen from Greek and Roman sites over 40 years were seized. The Symes Ltd liquidators signed an agreement involving Italian authorities and the Hellenic Republic, which is also seeking the return of hundreds of artifacts looted from Greece. The recovered collection is valued at approximately €12 million. Italian Culture Minister Gennaro Sangiuliano stated, "Works of art cannot become objects of illicit activities or, worse, of archaeological mafias: the illegal market must be crushed." He thanked the Carabinieri Command for the Protection of Cultural Heritage and the archaeologists who managed the recovery and curated the exhibition at Castel Sant'Angelo, where the artifacts will be temporarily displayed. About 70 additional artifacts claimed by Italy remain in the United States and will be recovered in the coming days by the Carabinieri. This repatriation follows a 2017 restitution by the J. Paul Getty Museum of a statuette of Zeus enthroned (2nd-1st century BCE) purchased from Symes.
