74th Estate Teatrale Veronese Festival Returns with Shakespeare Focus
The 74th edition of the Estate Teatrale Veronese festival runs from June 22 to September 15, 2022, at Verona's Teatro Romano, now restored to full capacity of 1,500 spectators. Artistic director Carlo Mangolini has chosen the slogan 'Semina_un nuovo inizio' (Sow a new beginning), emphasizing a return to normalcy after two pandemic-affected editions. The program centers on William Shakespeare, whose works are tied to Verona, with dance highlights including Eleonora Abbagnato in 'Giulietta' (July 19 and 22) and Michela Lucenti's Balletto Civile performing 'Lear'. Theater offerings feature Alessandro Preziosi in a musical-theatrical 'Julius Caesar' (July 7-8) and Natalino Balasso in Alessandro Baricco's adaptation of the 'Iliad' (September 1-3). Music includes Verona Jazz with Paolo Fresu (June 22) and Rumors Festival with Kings of Convenience (July 23) and Elio's tribute to Jannacci (June 23). The festival also introduces an international Fringe section in collaboration with Skenè-Università di Verona, showcasing young companies worldwide. Venues include Teatro Romano (17 premieres, 6 co-productions), Forte Gisella, and Terrazza di Giulietta. The festival was founded in 1948 by the Comune di Verona to honor Shakespeare, and is organized by the Assessorato alla Cultura del Comune with Arteven, supported by Ministero della Cultura, Regione Veneto, and sponsors AGSM AIM.
