71st Cannes Film Festival announces 2018 lineup with Italian hopes

festival-fair · 2026-05-04

The 71st Cannes Film Festival unveiled its official selection on April 12, 2018, in Paris, with president Pierre Lescure and artistic director Thierry Fremaux announcing the lineup. A key innovation is the '3 Days in Cannes' initiative, inviting young people aged 18–28 to attend from May 17–19, 2018, via a contest. The festival aims to restore cinema's sacredness with stricter regulations. Italian entries include Valeria Golino's 'Euphoria' in Un Certain Regard, Matteo Garrone's 'Dogman' in the main competition, and Alice Rohrwacher's 'Lazzaro Felice' also in competition. Cate Blanchett presides over the official jury. Returning regulars include Wim Wenders, Roman Polanski, and Marion Cotillard. The pop highlight is 'Solo: A Star Wars Story' by Ron Howard. The festival poster features the iconic kiss between Jean-Paul Belmondo and Anna Karina from Jean-Luc Godard's 'Pierrot le Fou', photographed by Georges Pierre and redesigned by Flore Maquin.
