70 Piranesi etchings from Vedute di Roma on view in Perugia

exhibition · 2026-04-27

The Galleria Nazionale dell’Umbria in Perugia will host an exhibition dedicated to Giovanni Battista Piranesi’s most famous series, Vedute di Roma, opening September 30, 2022. Titled Giovanni Battista Piranesi nelle collezioni della Galleria Nazionale dell’Umbria, the show presents 70 etchings from two volumes of the series, all from the museum’s own collection. Piranesi (1720–1778) spent his entire career on these views of Rome, showcasing his mastery of engraving, architectural imagination, and archaeological interest. The exhibition also features a 3D animated film, Piranesi, Carceri d’Invenzione 300 anni, by artist Grégoire Dupond with music by Teho Teardo, commissioned by the museum for the tercentenary of Piranesi’s birth in 2020. The film brings to life another iconic Piranesi series, Carceri d’invenzione, with labyrinthine stairs, towers, and suspended elements. Curated by Carla Scagliosi, the exhibition runs through January 8, 2023.
