70 Masterpieces Travel from Madrid's Thyssen-Bornemisza to Shanghai's MAP for Diplomatic Anniversary

exhibition · 2026-04-27

From June 22 to November 12, the Museum of Art Pudong (MAP) in Shanghai will host 70 masterpieces from the Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza in Madrid, marking the first time such a large and diverse group of works from the collection has traveled outside Spain. The exhibition, titled "The Great of Six Centuries: Masterpieces from Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum," celebrates 50 years of diplomatic relations between Spain and China, with support from the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Spanish Embassy in China, and the Instituto Cervantes. The collection spans the Renaissance to the 20th century, including portraits, landscapes, still lifes, and abstract works by artists such as Raphael, Manet, Rubens, Canaletto, Léger, Chagall, and Georgia O'Keeffe. The exhibition is produced by Shanghai Lujiazui Development Company and co-organized by the Thyssen Museum and MAP, following a chronological route in eight sections. Highlights include Raphael's "Young Man," Bronzino's "Cosimo I de' Medici," Rubens's "Venus and Cupid," Canaletto's Venetian view, Manet's "The Amazon," and works by Van Gogh, Bonnard, Nolde, Picasso, Braque, Léger, and O'Keeffe. The MAP, designed by Atelier Jean Nouvel, opened in 2021 during the pandemic.
