70 Capodimonte Masterpieces Travel to Louvre for Landmark Exhibition

exhibition · 2026-04-26

From June 7, 2023, the Louvre in Paris hosts around 70 works from the Museo e Real Bosco di Capodimonte in Naples for six months, during a partial renovation of the Italian museum. The exhibition, titled Napoli a Parigi, places masterpieces such as Caravaggio's Flagellation of Christ, Titian's Danae, Bellini's Transfiguration, Masaccio's Crucifixion, Annibale Carracci's Pietà, Guido Reni's Atalanta and Hippomenes, Artemisia Gentileschi's Judith Beheading Holofernes, and three works by Parmigianino (including Antea) in iconic Louvre spaces like the Grande Galerie, Salon Carré, Salvator Rosa room, and Chapelle. The loan aims to boost international awareness of Capodimonte's collection, often overshadowed abroad. It also highlights lesser-known works from the Neapolitan school by Jusepe de Ribera, Francesco Guarino, and Mattia Preti. The initiative was supported by donations from Neapolitan entrepreneurs funding frame restorations, coordinated by the museum's Advisory Board led by Giovanni Lombardi. Capodimonte director Sylvain Bellenger emphasized the partnership as a dialogue between two major European collections, enhancing both. Italian Culture Minister Gennaro Sangiuliano noted the exhibition will be accompanied by a cultural season dedicated to Naples, presenting its history, literature, music, theater, and cinema to French audiences.
