5th Anglet Biennial Scatters Works Across Town
The 5th Biennale d'Anglet, curated by Didier Arnaudet, runs from May 24 to September 1, 2013, across multiple sites near Biarritz. Venues include a media library, a villa, a shopping center, and a coastal promenade. Ten artists and a collective from the Palais de Tokyo's creation lab present works. Jérôme Schlomoff's blurry videos in the media library's octagonal gallery evoke a disquieting perception of reality. At Villa Beatrix, Julie Béna's video 'Talgne' appears more subdued. Gonçalo Sena burns a wall he previously filmed, undermining the exhibition concept. Théo Turpin carves 'The Triumph of Time over Strength' into a wooden desk. In the stormy park, Agnieska Ryskiewicz's swings and cabin seem fragile, while Feiko Beckers and Francesco Fonassi's sound installations are unobtrusive. Karina Bisch decorates the facade of Parc Izadia with colored diamonds. On the Barre plains, geometric sculptures dominate: Vincent Ganivet's concrete sphere and Pierre Labat's steel 'Corolle' that viewers can enter. Ange Leccia enlarges record covers, and Mathieu Mercier's 'Bouquet'—an assemblage of candelabras—is best seen at night.
