57th Venice Biennale Opens with Nine Trans-Pavilions
The 57th Venice Biennale, titled "Viva Arte Viva" and curated by Christine Macel, opened in 2017 with a structure of nine trans-pavilions. At the Giardini's Central Pavilion, two trans-pavilions are featured: the Pavilion of Artists and Books and the Pavilion of Joys and Fears. The former explores written communication through works by Irma Blank, Raymond Hains, Abdullah al Saadi, and Liu Ye. The latter, more impactful, includes Olafur Eliasson's workshop project, Taus Makhacheva's Caucasus, Marwan's large paintings, and Tibor Hajas's torture imagery, addressing current events without sensationalism. At the Arsenale's Corderie, seven trans-pavilions cover themes of Common Space, Earth, Traditions, Shamans, Dionysian, Colors, Time and Infinity. Artists include Leonor Antunes, Giorgio Griffa, Ernesto Neto, Liliana Porter, and Liu Jianhua. The Biennale runs from May 13 to November 26, 2017.
