57th Bice Bugatti-Giovanni Segantini Prize: Cuban artist José Rosabal wins career award
For the first time in 57 editions, the Premio alla Carriera Bice Bugatti – Giovanni Segantini was awarded to a non-Italian artist: Cuban painter José Rosabal (born 1935 in Manzanillo). The exhibition "Looking Forward to the Past" at Villa Brivio in Nova Milanese highlights his early work "Formas Geometricas" (1960) alongside recent paintings and drawings. Rosabal, a member of the Diez Pintores Concretos group, gained prominence in the "Concrete Cuba" shows at David Zwirner London (2015) and Chelsea NY (2016), as well as the 2015 Havana Biennial. Simultaneously, the collective OUT44—eleven students from the Visual Culture and Curatorial Practices biennium at Brera Academy of Fine Arts—presented "Vizio di Forma" at Villa Vertua for the Under 35 section. The group had previously worked in Nova Milanese on the project [TRAPARENTESI], inspired by Italo Calvino's "Six Memos for the Next Millennium," specifically the lecture on Transparency, which featured Carlo F/Miele's iconographic intrusion in a glass section of Villa Brivio. After the summer break, the 57th edition continues with a special project curated by Parasite 2.0, "Re-Drawing the theory \ Re-Drawing the House," from September 12 to 18, inviting young architects, designers, and artists to reflect on domestic space through drawing. Both exhibitions run until October 2, 2016.
