52 Impressionist Masterpieces from Detroit Institute of Arts on View at Rome's Ara Pacis
The Museo dell'Ara Pacis in Rome is hosting "Impressionismo e oltre," an exhibition of 52 masterpieces from the Detroit Institute of Arts, curated by Ilaria Miarelli Mariani and Claudio Zambianchi. The show spans from the 1840s to the early 20th century, tracing the evolution of European painting from Impressionism through Post-Impressionism, Cubism, Fauvism, and Expressionism. Works by Degas, Renoir, Pissarro, Cézanne, Sisley, Van Gogh, Matisse, Picasso, María Blanchard, Juan Gris, Modigliani, Soutine, and German Expressionists such as Kandinsky, Pechstein, Feininger, Nolde, Kokoschka, and Beckmann are featured. The exhibition highlights the DIA's collection built under director Wilhelm R. Valentiner (1924–1945) with support from major patrons. Current DIA director Salvador Salort-Pons emphasized the transatlantic dialogue fostered by the collaboration.
