50 Contemporary Artists Rename Picasso's Late Works in Madrid Exhibition

exhibition · 2026-04-27

An exhibition titled 'Picasso: sin título' at La Casa Encendida in Madrid presents 50 late works by Pablo Picasso (1963–1973) from the FABA collection, alongside new titles and texts by 50 contemporary artists, writers, musicians, and filmmakers invited by curator Eva Franch i Gilabert. The show, open until January 7, 2024, is part of the Picasso Year celebrations initiated by the late José Guirao. Twelve works are publicly exhibited for the first time, and twenty-three have never been seen in Spain. The contemporary participants were asked to rename each piece, as Picasso rarely titled his works, and to write explanatory texts, which are displayed on reflective steel plaques opposite the originals. The project aims to reinterpret Picasso's legacy through a critical, contemporary lens without ideological barriers.
