5 VR Animated Shorts to Watch on Meta Quest 2

A selection of five virtual reality animated shorts available on Meta Quest 2 showcases the potential of VR beyond gaming. 'BattleScar: Punk Was Invented By Girls' (Nico Casavecchia, Martín Allais, 30 min, three episodes) follows two runaway girls forming a punk duo in late 1970s USA, narrated by Rosario Dawson. Produced by Atlas V and ARTE France, it is also available on YouTube as a 360° animation. 'Dear Angelica' (Saschka Unseld, 13 min, narrated by Mae Whitman) was painted inside VR using the Quill tool, later open-sourced by its creator Iñigo Quilez. Originally from Oculus Story Studio (closed 2017), it is free on Meta Quest and Rift. 'Gloomy Eyes' (Fernando Maldonado, Jorge Tereso, 30 min, three episodes, narrated by Colin Farrell) tells a love story between a living girl and a zombie boy in a sunless world, produced by 3DAR, Atlas V, ARTE France, and RYOT. 'Tales from Soda Island' (Dan Franke, five episodes plus extras) is a dialogue-free series drawn in Quill by Smoothstep, set in a shared world with varied tones, available free in the VR Animation Player app from Studio Syro. 'The Line' (Ricardo Laganaro, 15-20 min, narrated by Rodrigo Santoro) is set in a miniature 1940s São Paulo with interactive elements, blending animation and gaming, produced by ARVORE Immersive Experiences. These works illustrate VR animation's evolving narrative possibilities.
