4site Architects' Shared Space Pavilion in Karnataka Offers Flexible Community Hub

architecture-design · 2026-04-17

Shared Space, a 6,500-square-foot pavilion, has been finalized by 4site Architects under the direction of Chandrakant Kanthigavi. Situated within the six-acre Prashanthi Kutir landscape near Belagavi, Karnataka, India, this climate-responsive design boasts a lightweight roof that extends across brick plinths, facilitating a column-free area that allows for visual connectivity with the surrounding landscape. The pavilion is intended as a versatile space for various activities, including wellness workshops, community dining, cultural events, and retreat gatherings. A central void links the upper and lower ground levels, enhancing natural light and ventilation while serving as a communal area. Circulation is managed through a network of pathways, with the lower level directly connected to paddy fields and a swimming pool, while the upper level offers an open platform for both everyday use and larger gatherings. The project's layered volumes adapt to the daily rhythms of the retreat. The work was captured by photographer Ekansh Goel and submitted to designboom, edited by Christina Vergopoulou.
