€4M Project to Revitalize Naples' Rione Sanità Through Catacombs
An agreement titled 'Napoli rione Sanità: una porta verso il futuro' has been established between the Archdiocese of Naples and the Superintendence of Archaeology. This initiative, backed by €4 million from the Ministry of Cultural Heritage, focuses on enhancing the Capodimonte hill and the Catacombs of San Gennaro. The objective is to improve access between the Museo di Capodimonte, the National Archaeological Museum, and the catacombs by eliminating obstacles and installing elevators. Key plans involve securing the tuff ridge, modifying pathways for accessibility, and restoring a quarry and garden. This project is based on research from the University of Naples Federico II and will be overseen by cooperatives linked to the Fondazione di Comunità San Gennaro, which employs 50-60 young individuals.
