49 Italian Artists Reimagine Vogue Italia's White Cover
Vogue Italia's March 2021 issue features 49 unique cover artworks by Italian artists, conceived by curator Valentina Ciarallo during the first lockdown in 2020. The project responds to the iconic all-white cover of April 2020, which symbolized respect and rebirth amid the pandemic. Ciarallo invited 49 Italian artists born between 1961 (Stefano Arienti and Mario Airò) and 1990 (Bea Bonafini) to work manually on the white page, treating it as a canvas. The works were created from April to June 2020, exploring themes such as environmental protection, climate change, reconnection with nature, Europe, diversity, and women's rights. Artists drew inspiration from figures like Pasolini, Simone de Beauvoir, Han Kang, Italo Calvino, Alighiero Boetti, Schopenhauer, Aldo Rossi, and events like Ustica and Black Lives Matter. Each piece is unique yet part of a collective project. Vogue Italia's editor Emanuele Farneti emphasized that creativity serves as a means to build a more just, sustainable, and inclusive society. The issue also honors creativity across models, actresses, musicians, activists, and photographers.
