40 Years of Springsteen's 'Born in the USA': An Anthem of Disillusionment

publication · 2026-04-26

In July 1984, as the US under Reagan experienced economic recovery and near-historic low unemployment, Bruce Springsteen released 'Born in the USA'. The album critiques the manipulation of patriotism by Reagan's propaganda, addressing unresolved social issues like the Vietnam War's scars, Watergate, and the Tehran embassy hostage crisis. Springsteen portrays characters with broken hearts and lost lives, resisting with dignity. The title track, one of the most misunderstood rock songs, tells the story of a Vietnam veteran alienated by a materialistic society. The cover photo by Annie Leibovitz and Andrea Klein shows Springsteen in a white T-shirt, worn jeans, and a red baseball cap in his back pocket, with the American flag behind him. The cap was a tribute to the father of his friend Lance Larson. The album reflects Springsteen's hope for a compassionate America, rejecting ultraliberalism.
