40 Years After Irpinia Earthquake: How the Art World Responded

cultural-heritage · 2026-04-27

On November 23, 1980, a devastating earthquake struck Naples and the Irpinia region, lasting 90 seconds and killing 3,000 people, injuring 8,000, and displacing nearly 300,000. The disaster prompted a global solidarity chain from Saudi Arabia to the US. In the art world, gallerist Lucio Amelio organized the Terrae Motus exhibition years later, featuring 70 works on the earthquake theme by artists including Keith Haring and Andy Warhol, who turned the newspaper headline 'FATE PRESTO' into an iconic poster. Originally a temporary show at the Reggia di Caserta, it is now a permanent contemporary art collection there. In 1981, filmmaker Lina Wertmüller directed the documentary 'È una domenica sera di novembre.' Musician Pino Daniele released the song 'È sempre sera.' The colossal statue of the Madonna atop the Basilica dell'Incoronata Madre del Buon Consiglio on Capodimonte hill fell during the quake, breaking into three pieces but miraculously injuring no one. Partially reassembled, it remained on the church steps until June 1983, when it was restored to its original position. The statue became a symbol of the tragedy and resilience.
