40 Artists Donate Works for Sotheby's Auction to Fund New Studio Museum in Harlem

On May 16-17, 2018, Sotheby's will host an auction featuring pieces donated by 40 artists to aid in the development of the new Studio Museum in Harlem. Established in 1968, the museum is set to construct a facility designed by David Adjaye in partnership with Cooper Robertson, with an estimated cost of $122 million, of which New York City has contributed $25 million. The auction, named 'Creating Space: Artists for The Studio Museum of Harlem. An Auction to Benefit the Museum’s New Building,' includes contributions from artists such as Njideka Akunyili Crosby, Mark Bradford, and Sam Gilliam, who first showcased his work there in 1969. The new site will also feature Glenn Ligon's 'Give Us a Poem' (2007). Originally, the museum was located in a rented loft on Fifth Avenue, later moving to a commercial building renovated by J. Max Bond Jr. and redesigned by Rogers Marvel Architects in 2001. The new facility will include exhibition spaces, a panoramic terrace, galleries, multifunctional areas, and an artist residency.
