35th São Paulo Biennial foregrounds queer and Black historical figures with nearly 10% sexodissident artists

The 35th São Paulo Biennial, titled 'Coreografias do impossível', is set to commence on September 6 at Ibirapuera, showcasing 119 artists chosen by curators Diane Lima, Grada Kilomba, Hélio Menezes, and Manuel Borja-Villel. Among the artists, nearly 10% identify as trans, travesti, or non-binary, featuring talents such as Tadáskía, Castiel Vitorino Brasileiro, and Daniel Lie. This exhibition emphasizes themes of the female body, gender, and Black identity, paying tribute to three trailblazing Black women: Xica Manicongo, Aurora Cursino dos Santos, and Stella do Patrocínio. It also includes the Trans Memory Archive collective and highlights works on African spirituality by Inaicyra Falcão dos Santos, alongside contributions from Cabello e Carceller, Citra Sasmita, Bouchra Ouizgen, Guadalupe Maravilla, Carmézia Emiliano, and Amos Gitai.
