35 Years Since the Fall of the Berlin Wall: Art and Memory

cultural-heritage · 2026-04-26

On November 9, 2024, Berlin marks the 35th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, which led to German reunification after 44 years. The city offers numerous ways to engage with this history, including cycling the 160-kilometer Berliner Mauerweg, divided into 14 segments. Key sites include Checkpoint Charlie, now a museum documenting escape plans, and the East Side Gallery, a section of the wall painted by artists with peace-themed murals. Notable artworks include Birgit Kinder's Trabant crashing through the wall and the famous kiss between Erich Honecker and Leonid Brezhnev. The Parliament of Trees, created by sculptor Ben Wagin near the Reichstag, incorporates original wall segments and granite slabs listing 258 victims. On Bernauer Strasse, the Berlin Wall Memorial features an outdoor exhibition, documentation center, and Chapel of Reconciliation. The Tränenpalast (Palace of Tears) was a border checkpoint where families parted. The exhibition 'Dream On—Berlin, the 90s' at C/o Berlin showcases photographs by nine members of the Ostkreuz agency from East Berlin. The Teufelsberg hill, once a Cold War listening station for US and British intelligence, now hosts hundreds of street art works. The Drachenberg, also made from WWII rubble, offers green space. The 368-meter Television Tower, commissioned in 1964 by Walter Ulbricht, symbolized East German technological prowess and provided TV broadcasting.
