34th São Paulo Biennial Opens Collective Show and Announces Virtual Program

exhibition · 2026-04-23

The 34th São Paulo Biennial opens its doors on November 14 with the collective exhibition Vento, a preview of the main event postponed to September next year due to the pandemic. Curated by Jacoppo Crivelli Visconti with assistant curator Paulo Miyada, the show features works by 21 artists selected from the approximately 100 participants planned for the final edition. Titled Faz escuro mas eu canto, the Biennial's core concept involves extending the event over time through successive individual shows. Vento occupies the three floors of the Pavilhão do Ibirapuera in an experimental configuration without traditional display supports, emphasizing proximity and distance. The selection intentionally reflects the pandemic's effects and isolation. Alongside the physical exhibition, the Biennial launches new virtual initiatives including Visitas aos ateliês and Encontros com os Artistas, with the second online meeting scheduled for November 26 featuring indigenous artists Jaider Esbell, Jaune Quick-to-see, Sebastián Calfuqueo Aliste, and Sung Tieu. The institution confirms that communication strategies limiting in-person contact will remain for some time.
