32nd São Paulo Biennial Confronts Political and Ecological Uncertainty Through Garden Framework

The 32nd São Paulo Biennial, named 'Incerteza Viva' (Live Uncertainty), commenced on 7 September 2016 at the Ciccillo Matarazzo Pavilion during a time of political turmoil and environmental crises. Curated by Jochen Volz, the pavilion was linked to Ibirapuera Park. The exhibition's significance grew following the impeachment of President Dilma Rousseff and the disaster at the Minas Gerais dam. Featured works included Carolina Caycedo's 'A Gente Rio – Be Dammed' (2016) addressing water privatization, Rosa Barba's film 'Disseminate and Hold' (2016), along with ecological installations by Eduardo Navarro and Frans Krajcberg. The biennial, which concluded on 11 December 2016, explored the interplay between culture and nature amid contemporary uncertainties.
