award · 2026-05-08

On April 18, the Frost Science museum hosted the second annual STEM Challenge Expo, attracting over 90 middle and high school students from South Florida. Located in the Hsiao Family Special Exhibition Gallery, the event encouraged participants to utilize emerging technologies such as AI, wearables, and sensors to enhance various fields including astronomy, health, marine science, and paleontology. Projects included everything from functional applications to a large robotic cockroach. Former astronaut Nicole Stott gave a keynote speech, highlighting the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration and responding to student inquiries. Following an initial judging round, 31 students received college scholarships for one to four years through Florida Prepaid, with winners revealed at a ceremony on April 21. The expo experienced three times the submissions compared to its first year. The theme for next year will be 'Sustainable Energy Generation and Use,' with registration already underway. The event was made possible by the Glenn W. Bailey Foundation.
