300-Year-Old Revolutionary War Witness Tree Undergoes Lifesaving Treatment

In South Carolina, a 300-year-old live oak, known as a witness tree from the Revolutionary War, has recently undergone urgent maintenance due to failing support chains. Standing 45 feet tall, this tree is located near Eutaw Springs Battlefield Park, where steel restraints were installed following a lightning strike 50 years ago. Arborists from SavATree took action by replacing the hardware, removing dead branches, decompacting the soil, and injecting essential nutrients. Aron Landsaw pointed out that the chains were impairing circulation. This tree is situated on a four-acre site preserved by the American Battlefield Trust and the South Carolina Battleground Preservation Trust, which aim to enhance the battlefield park. The Battle of Eutaw Springs took place on September 8, 1781, featuring Major General Nathanael Greene and Lieutenant Colonel Alexander Stewart.
