300 theatrical masks on display at Spazio Rossellini in Rome

exhibition · 2026-04-27

From April 5 to 9, 2022, Spazio Rossellini in Rome hosts an exhibition of 300 theatrical masks, including leather Commedia dell'arte masks, Venetian papier-mâché masks, larval masks, exotic masks, and original pieces created for performances. Organized by the association Maschera Scenica, the exhibition draws on private collections of its members. The display focuses on three aspects: the body that wears the mask, the festival or ritual where it is used, and the craftsman who made it. Artisans specialized in traditional mask-making are present, and professionals such as actors and directors offer live demonstrations of mask techniques. Mario Gallo of Teatro Ricerche states the exhibition aims to promote the scenic mask in all its aspects, from conception to stage use, and to pass on its tradition to future generations while looking toward innovation. On April 9, from 3 to 7 PM, a roundtable titled "Il Teatro e La Maschera: prospettive e criticità" involves the public in a symposium on acting experience and the future of the mask. The exhibition is open Tuesday to Friday 2–6 PM, Saturday 10 AM–7 PM; weekday mornings are reserved for secondary school students.
