30 International Women Photographers at Forlì's San Domenico Museums

The San Domenico Museums in Forlì present '30 grandi fotografe', a survey of over 300 photographs by 30 international women photographers spanning the 1930s to the present. The exhibition is divided into three chronological sections. The first section opens with Dorothea Lange's Depression-era images of human dignity and despair, followed by Lee Miller's photographs inside Hitler's Munich apartment, Lisette Model's reflections on New York consumerism, Tina Modotti's socialist iconography of Mexican workers, and Eve Arnold's behind-the-scenes shots of African American women in Harlem. The second section (1960s-1980s) includes Inge Morath's 'Mask' series with Saul Steinberg, Graciela Iturbide's matriarchal community in Juchitán, Letizia Battaglia's mafia crime scenes and Palermo children, Carla Cerati's 'Mondo cocktail' capturing Milan's bourgeoisie, Lisetta Carmi's 1965 series on Genoa's transgender community in the former Jewish ghetto, and Annie Leibovitz's 2016 Pirelli Calendar featuring prominent women. The final section (late 20th-early 21st century) features Newsha Tavakolian's portraits of FARC women guerrillas in Colombia, Nanna Heitmann's dreamlike images of the Yenisei River in Siberia, Zanele Muholi's self-portraits exploring identity, Shadi Ghadirian's 'Qajar' series juxtaposing contemporary Iranian women with anachronistic props, and Cristina de Middel's 'Afronauts' project about Zambia's unofficial space program.
