27th São Paulo Biennial Abolishes National Pavilions

festival-fair · 2026-04-23

The 27th São Paulo Biennial, which took place from October 7 to December 17, 2006, was curated by Lisette Lagnado and others and did away with national representations. Entitled "How to Live Together," the exhibition was inspired by the lectures of Roland Barthes and the ideas of Hélio Oiticica, although it did not include any works by Oiticica himself, showcasing instead photographs and Ivan Cardoso's film "Heliorama." The event emphasized artists working to enhance living conditions, with 30 out of 118 invited artists hailing from South America. Additionally, ten residencies welcomed international artists such as Alberto Baraya and Armando Andrade Tudela. Six seminars commenced in January 2006, while historical elements featured Dan Graham's projections and the reconstructions of Gordon Matta-Clark's pieces. Activism resulted in the censorship of Superflex's "Guarana Power," and initiatives like Eloisa Cartonera and Taller Popular de Serigrafia examined the role of the "artist-worker."
