22nd Bienal de Arte Paiz in Guatemala Focuses on Indigenous Rights and Migration
The 22nd Bienal de Arte Paiz, named 'Perdidos. No meio. Juntos' (Lost. In the middle. Together), wrapped up on June 6 in Guatemala City and Antigua Guatemala. Curators Alexia Tala and Gabriel Rodríguez Pellecer showcased the work of 40 artists, such as Ayrson Heráclito, Detánico & Lain, Jonathas de Andrade, and Vanderlei Lopes. The biennial, inspired by Jonas Staal’s exploration of refugee issues, highlighted the realities of Latin America, particularly concerning indigenous rights and migration. It took place across six venues and featured solo displays by Aníbal López and Paz Errázuriz, the latter continuing beyond the biennial. With a focus on local engagement and education, the event saw a public turnout that surpassed expectations.
