award · 2026-04-20

Four artists have been nominated for the 2019 Turner Prize: Lawrence Abu Hamdan, Helen Cammock, Tai Shani, and Oscar Murillo. Their works will be exhibited at Turner Contemporary in Margate from 28 September 2019 to January 2020, with the winner announced on 3 December. Lawrence Abu Hamdan, based in Beirut, focuses on audio investigations used as legal evidence and advocacy for organizations like Amnesty International. He received the 2018 Abraaj Group Art Prize and the 2016 Nam June Paik Award. Helen Cammock, awarded the 2018 Max Mara Art Prize for Women, will present a solo show at Whitechapel Gallery in June 2019 titled 'Che Si Può Fare (What Can be Done)'. Her work explores histories and unheard voices through multimedia. Tai Shani creates performances, films, and installations that blend narrative and theoretical prose to challenge dominant perspectives. Her project 'Dark Continent Productions' adapts Christine de Pizan's 1405 feminist book. Oscar Murillo, a Colombian-British artist, examines community and transnational movement through painting, installation, and his long-term project 'Frequencies', which involves students worldwide. He has exhibitions this year at Kettle's Yard, chi K11 art museum, and Galerie Isabella Bortolozzi.
