200 Drones Recreate Van Gogh Paintings Over Amsterdam Sky
To celebrate its 50th anniversary, the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam commissioned Studio DRIFT to create a drone performance over the city. On June 2, 2023, at 11 PM, 200 illuminated drones formed iconic Van Gogh motifs—including sunflowers and the artist's signature—in the night sky near the museum. The event was the highlight of the Sunflower Art Festival, which featured street theater, open-air painting sessions, and concerts. Since May 12, the museum has also hosted the exhibition "Van Gogh ad Auvers. I suoi ultimi mesi" (Van Gogh in Auvers. His Last Months), organized in collaboration with the Musée d'Orsay in Paris and running until September 3, 2023. The show focuses on works Van Gogh created during his stay in Auvers-sur-Oise, France, including Wheatfield with Crows and Doctor Paul Gachet, marking the first comprehensive overview of his final, crucial artistic phase. The Van Gogh Museum opened on June 2, 1973, and holds the world's largest collection of the artist's works.
