20-meter section of Berlin Wall discovered in Mitte district

cultural-heritage · 2026-05-04

A previously unknown 20-meter section of the Berlin Wall has been discovered in the central Mitte district of Berlin, nearly 30 years after the wall fell. The find was made by Berlin's urban development councillor Ephraim Gothe during a visit to a newly built residential complex. Gothe recounted to The Guardian that the group stumbled upon the wall in a small grove near the building and immediately suspected it might be part of the outer defense barrier built by East Germany. Subsequent studies confirmed the suspicion. The discovery coincides with the 57th anniversary of the wall's construction on August 13, 1961. Günther Schulsche of the Berlin Wall Foundation, which commemorates Holocaust victims and the wall's history, confirmed the find and suggested more sections may be hidden in wooded areas on the city's outskirts. The Berlin Wall, built during the Cold War to divide East and West Berlin, was breached on June 9, 1989, and Germany was reunified on October 3, 1990. The largest known remaining section is the East Side Gallery, nearly 1.5 kilometers long, decorated by international artists as a memorial to freedom.
