1999: Kubrick, Leonardo's Horse, and Forte di Bard

cultural-heritage · 2026-05-04

The year 1999 marked the death of Stanley Kubrick, the completion of Leonardo da Vinci's colossal bronze horse after 500 years, and the start of the Forte di Bard restoration. Kubrick, born in New York in 1928 and died in St Albans in 1999, was honored by the Lucca Film Festival with a tribute exhibition titled 'KUBRICK. Fra cinema e pittura' curated by Riccardo Ferrucci, featuring paintings by Andrea Gnocchi until April 23. The Leonardo Horse Project, an 8-meter bronze statue designed by Leonardo da Vinci for Francesco Sforza between 1482 and 1493, was finally realized by sculptor Nina Akamu. The project was initiated by Charles Dent in 1977 and funded by Frederik Meijer after Dent's death in 1994. The statue is housed at the Ippodromo SNAI San Siro in Milan, and on April 10, 2019, during Design Week, the Leonardo Horse Project event curated by Cristina Morozzi and Massimo Temporelli celebrated the 500th anniversary of Leonardo's death, featuring 13 replicas by international designers. In 1999, the architectural restoration of Forte di Bard, a 19th-century Savoy fortress in Valle d'Aosta, began. The fort opened to the public on January 13, 2006, with the Museo delle Alpi and temporary exhibition spaces. A photo exhibition 'Storia di un'avventura. Forte di Bard 1999-2019. Fotografie di Gianfranco Roselli' runs until November 10.
