1970s French Feminist Video Collectives Discussed at SPACE London

exhibition · 2026-04-22

On June 25, 2014, Alaina Claire Feldman chatted with Nicole Fernández Ferrer from the Centre audiovisuel Simone de Beauvoir in Paris during the 'Cherchez la Femme' exhibition at SPACE in London. They discussed the influential French feminist video collectives from the 1970s, like Video Out, Vidéa, and Les Insoumuses, which used portable cameras to promote feminism and political activism, drawing inspiration from the May 1968 student protests and the second-wave feminist movement. Curated by Feldman, the exhibition ran until July 13, 2014, showcasing videos from the Centre that Feldman and Stéphanie Jeanjean translated into English. To celebrate, Afterall journal offered free access to Jeanjean's article from issue 27. The free event, which needed prior booking, started at 19:30 at 129–131 Mare Street, London E8 3RH.
