1969: Stonewall, Domingo-Zeffirelli, and When Attitudes Become Form

exhibition · 2026-05-04

The Museum of the City of New York presents 'PRIDE: Photographs of Stonewall and Beyond by Fred W. McDarrah' until December 31, 2019, marking the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall riots that began on June 28, 1969, at the Stonewall Inn in Greenwich Village. The uprising, which sparked six days of protests, is considered a catalyst for the modern LGBTQ rights movement and the global Pride parades. In 1969, Spanish tenor Plácido Domingo made his debut at La Scala on December 7 as Ernani in Verdi's opera, and also debuted at the Arena di Verona. That year, he first met director Franco Zeffirelli, who later directed him in 'Turandot' at the Met and Verona. Zeffirelli, who died recently at 96, also staged the 2019 'La Traviata' at the Arena. Meanwhile, the Kunsthalle Bern inaugurated the landmark exhibition 'When Attitudes Become Form' curated by Harald Szeemann, emphasizing process and behavior in contemporary art. The show was revisited at Castello di Rivoli with archival materials.
