1969: Pasolini's Medea, Mies van der Rohe's Death, and IULM's Founding

The year 1969 marked several milestones in art and culture. In the summer, Pier Paolo Pasolini filmed his movie Medea in Grado, Italy, starring Maria Callas, with exteriors shot in Cappadocia, Aleppo, Pisa, and Grado. The film, based on Euripides' tragedy, contributed 14 minutes of footage to cinema history. To commemorate the 50th anniversary, a photographic exhibition opened on June 15 at the former Cinema Cristallo in Grado. Also in 1969, German architect and designer Ludwig Mies van der Rohe died in Chicago at age 83. A master of the Modern Movement, he designed the Barcelona Pavilion, Tugendhat House (a UNESCO World Heritage site), and served as Bauhaus director from 1930 to 1935. He later moved to Chicago, where he designed the IIT campus, Farnsworth House, Seagram Building, and Neue Nationalgalerie. Additionally, IULM University in Milan was founded on March 20, 1969, as one of Italy's first institutions to grant academic status to communication studies. Its campus in the Barona district was established in 1994, and a retrospective exhibition curated by Migliore+Servetto Architects with Italo Lupi runs until July 26 at IULM 6.
