1959: Lignano Sabbiadoro, BIAF, and Pontecorvo's Kapò

In 2019, Lignano Sabbiadoro celebrated its 60th anniversary as a municipality with the exhibition 'Cinema in bikini. Italiani al mare: manifesti 1949-1999' at the Terrazza a Mare, curated by Andrea Tomasetig and Enrico Minisini, running until July 17. The show features about a hundred posters and lobby cards from the Minisini Collection, focusing on Italian beach cinema. The town, designed by architect Marcello D'Olivo, was praised by Ernest Hemingway as the 'Florida d'Italia' and hosted figures like Leonardo Sinisgalli, Giorgio Scerbanenco, Italo Zannier, Alberto Sordi, and Virna Lisi. Also in 1959, the BIAF Biennale Internazionale dell'Antiquariato di Firenze was founded by Luigi Bellini's sons Mario and Giuseppe with the Associazione Antiquari d'Italia, held at Palazzo Strozzi. The 2019 edition runs September 21-29 at Palazzo Corsini, coinciding with the first Florence Art Week. Gillo Pontecorvo's film 'Kapò' (1959), nominated for an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film in 1961, was restored by Cineteca di Bologna and screened at the Festa del Cinema di Roma (October 17-27) for the centenary of Pontecorvo's birth. The film follows a 14-year-old Jewish girl who becomes a Kapo at Auschwitz.
