1909: Ballets Russes, de Chirico's Prometheus, and Morbelli's Divisionist Turn

exhibition · 2026-05-04

The year 1909 marked the Paris debut of the Ballets Russes, though the company was officially founded in 1911 by impresario Serge Diaghilev. To commemorate the 90th anniversary of Diaghilev's death, Bonhams London will host an exhibition from May 28 to June 5 focusing on costumes from 'The Firebird,' with music by Igor Stravinsky. That same year, Giorgio de Chirico created 'Prometheus,' his first work where myth is hidden within natural landscape, inspired by Arnold Böcklin. De Chirico's version and that of his brother Alberto Savinio are exhibited alongside Böcklin's 'Prometheus' at Fondazione Magnani-Rocca until June 30, 2019. Angelo Morbelli completed 'Un Natale! Al Pio Albergo Trivulzio' in 1909, the last of a series depicting Milan's Pio Albergo Trivulzio, marking his Divisionist shift. Morbelli is celebrated in a major exhibition at GAM – Galleria d'Arte Moderna di Milano until June 16, 2019, on the centenary of his death.
