19'40'' Subscription Record Label Merges Classical and Popular Music

publication · 2026-05-05

Founded in December 2016 by multi-instrumentalist Enrico Gabrielli, percussionist Sebastiano De Gennaro, and musicologist Francesco Fusaro, 19'40'' is a subscription-based record label that releases audio, video, and graphic works quarterly. The label's philosophy revolves around 'sabotage, transcription, and calque' to produce what they call 'anti-classical music.' The first four releases include Igor Stravinsky's 1918 'Histoire du Soldat' with graphic design by Olimpia Zagnoli, and a mash-up of Modest Mussorgsky with Emerson, Lake and Palmer. The latest release also features a link to 'Pictures at an Exhibition' by Australian artist Andrew Quinn, known for sound-reacting video techniques. The sixth release, on August 6, was recorded at the France Pavilion by Xavier Veilhan during the last Venice Biennale, performed by the ensemble Esecutori di Metallo su Carta directed by Marcello Corti.
