1891: Birth of Pier Luigi Nervi, Divisionism, and Alberto Savinio

cultural-heritage · 2026-05-04

Pier Luigi Nervi, an influential Italian structural engineer, was born in 1891. Renowned for his groundbreaking application of reinforced concrete, Nervi's notable structures, such as the Stadio Flaminio in Rome and the Palazzo delle Esposizioni in Turin, are currently facing neglect. However, a conservation initiative for Stadio Flaminio was launched by the Getty Foundation in 2017. A photographic endeavor by Matteo Cirenei and Marco Menghi, capturing Nervi's architectural legacy, is approaching its conclusion. That same year, Milan hosted the inaugural Triennale di Brera, featuring Divisionism and prominent artists like Giovanni Segantini and Gaetano Previati. Segantini's 'Alpe di Maggio' is set to be displayed at Castello Gamba from July 12 to September 29. Additionally, 1891 marked the birth of Andrea de Chirico, also known as Alberto Savinio.
