16th-century mural discovered on Venice hotel facade near Rialto Bridge

A 16th-century mural painting was discovered on the facade of the Hotel Rialto in Venice during maintenance work. The fresco, executed a secco, was found under layers of plaster by restorer Martina Serafin and reported to the Soprintendenza Archeologia, Belle Arti e Paesaggio di Venezia. Conservation work consolidated the paint layer and removed a gray coating that had dulled the colors, revealing skilled chiaroscuro treatment. The mural depicts two female figures and one male figure in an allegorical iconography, but the artist remains unknown. The discovery occurred during facade restoration contracted to Costruzioni e Restauri Salmistrari with Seres. The painting is now visible from Riva del Ferro along the Grand Canal, though future relocation is possible for better preservation. The article notes that painted facades were common in 16th-century Venice, with artists like Giorgione, Titian, Tintoretto, Veronese, Pordenone, Jacopo Palma il Vecchio, and Andrea Schiavone having worked on such decorations.
