132 Architects Draw for the New Syria at IUAV Venice
Sketch for Syria, an exhibition at the IUAV University of Venice's Rectorate Gallery, opens Tuesday, January 17, 2017. It presents 132 sketchbooks created by architects including A12 and Álvaro Siza, 52 Syrian designers, and various Italian professionals. The works emerged from a call for drawings launched by the university in July 2016, following an agreement with UN-ESCWA, the UN body for Syrian reconstruction. The drawings explore perspectives and visions for Syria, reflecting on past or imaginary journeys, future hypotheses, and the drama of refugees and migrants. The exhibition continues IUAV's support for Syria, which previously included the Homage to Venice for Palmyra dedicated to archaeologist Khaled Al Asaad and the drafting of the Venice Charter for Reconstruction.
