13 Artists Confront the Present at Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo
The Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo in Turin presents 'Qualcosa nell’aria' (Something in the Air), the third chapter of the Verso initiative for young artists, produced with the Regione Piemonte. Curated by Irene Calderoni and Bernardo Follini, the group exhibition features 13 artists whose works address urgent contemporary issues. The show opens with a video by Muna Mussie, a performance from last autumn in Parco del Valentino denouncing the historical amnesia of colonialism. Other highlights include Eclectic Electric Collective / Tools for Action's giant hammer symbolizing collective awareness, Sara Leghissa's posters quoting Milanese youth during lockdown, Artur Zmijewski's inaugural performance, and Rory Pilgrim's film about eco-activists in Idaho. Themes of feminism and ecology emerge in videos by Marwa Arsanios and Carolina Caycedo, the latter including global protest footage. Ghita Skali's 'Ali Baba Express: Episode 5' parodies Chinese e-commerce, while Natascha Sadr Haghighian critiques anthropocentrism. Andreas Gursky's diptych 'Pyongyang II' addresses totalitarianism, and Alberto Tadiello's work denounces weaponized sound. Sandra Mujinga's enlarged black silhouettes and Arthur Jafa's black Confederate flag confront identity and racism. The exhibition runs at the Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo in Turin.
