13 Artists Celebrate Peace in Vittorio Veneto 100 Years After WWI

exhibition · 2026-05-04

On November 4, 2018, Vittorio Veneto commemorated the centenary of the WWI armistice signed at Villa Giusti by hosting '1918. When Peace Breaks Out,' a contemporary art exhibition curated by Dimitri Ozerkov, who leads the Contemporary Art Department and the 20/21 Project at the State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg. Thirteen artists from twelve nations involved in the Great War—Italy, France, UK, Russia, Austria, Germany, Hungary, Belgium, Greece, Czech Republic, Serbia, and Croatia—produced site-specific installations throughout the city. The featured artists included Dario Agrimi, Anaïs Chabeur, and others. The event, organized by Villaggio Globale International, concluded with a guided tour titled 'Take a walk on the art side' leading to the Museo della Battaglia. Ozerkov emphasized the project's goal of shifting the narrative from military valor to peace and creativity, noting that European unification began in Vittorio Veneto with the ceasefire. Most artworks will remain permanently, and plans for an annual contemporary art exhibition in the city are underway, with a second edition scheduled for 2019.
