125 Raffaello drawings on show at Oxford's Ashmolean Museum

exhibition · 2026-05-05

The Ashmolean Museum in Oxford will host the largest exhibition of drawings by Raphael since 1983, featuring 125 works attributed to the Renaissance master. Running from June 1 to September 3, 2017, the show draws primarily from the museum's own collection, which holds the world's largest group of Raphael drawings, many from Sir Thomas Lawrence's collection acquired in 1845. Additional loans come from the Albertina Museum in Vienna, where the exhibition will travel in autumn 2017. The 1983 show at the British Museum in London also featured works from English collections. The exhibition highlights the enduring appeal of Italian Renaissance art in UK institutions, coinciding with the National Gallery's Michelangelo and Sebastiano del Piombo exhibition.
