111 West 57th Street: World's Skinniest Skyscraper Blends Tech and Preservation
111 West 57th Street, the second tallest residential tower in the Western Hemisphere, has become a New York City landmark by combining cutting-edge technology with historic preservation. The skyscraper, known as the world's skinniest, rises 1,428 feet with a width-to-height ratio of 1:24. Its design incorporates the restored Steinway Hall, a 1925 landmark, into its base. The tower features 60 condominium units, with prices starting at $7.5 million. Developed by JDS Development Group and Property Markets Group, the building was designed by SHoP Architects. The structure uses a tuned mass damper to mitigate sway, and its terracotta facade references the original Steinway Hall. The project broke ground in 2014 and topped out in 2019.
