10th Berlin Biennale Opens with Gabi Ngcobo's Curatorial Vision 'We don't need another hero'
The 10th Berlin Biennale, overseen by Gabi Ngcobo alongside collaborators Nomaduma Rosa Masilela, Serubiri Moses, Thiago de Paula Souza, and Yvette Mutumba, is set to continue until 9 September 2018. Entitled 'We don't need another hero', this exhibition showcases the work of 46 artists and collectives, such as Dineo Seshee Bopape, Ana Mendieta, Portia Zvavahera, and Luke Willis Thompson. Locations include Akademie der Künste, Kunst-Werke, Volksbühne pavilion, ZK/U – Center for Art and Urbanistics in Moabit, and HAU Hebbel am Ufer in Kreuzberg. The public program 'I'm Not Who You Think I'm Not' kicks off the opening weekend with performances and events. Notably, HAU Hebbel am Ufer will host Kwaito music events on 15–16 June to commemorate the 42nd anniversary of the 1976 Soweto student uprising. Ngcobo's curatorial vision challenges singular interpretations of 'collective psychosis', advocating for diverse understandings of knowledge and power that embrace contradictions. This biennale features fewer artists compared to the last one curated by DIS.
