100 Back-Turned Portraits of Refugees on Venice's Procuratie Vecchie
Until September 7, 2025, 100 large-scale photographs installed on the facade of the Procuratie Vecchie in Piazza San Marco, Venice, depict refugees from behind, refusing frontality. The installation is part of the exhibition "Dreams in Transit" hosted by The Human Safety Net and organized with Arts for Action, curated by Amandine Lepoutre and Margaux Plessy. Inspired by JR's Inside Out Project, the show includes works by Sarah Makharine, Ange Leccia, Leila Alaoui, Lorraine de Sagazan, and Anouk Maugein. Makharine presents a photograph with voice recordings of migration stories; Leccia installs interconnected illuminated globes; Alaoui documents Syrian refugees in Lebanon; de Sagazan and Maugein create a site-specific installation of 700 hotel bed sheets. The exhibition explores the meaning of home and the transformative power of art.
