#10 Pianos Street Returns for Piano City Milano 2016 with Five Artists

Michael Nyman will open the 2016 edition of Piano City Milano with a concert of his most famous pieces, including music from The Piano and Gattaca. The festival runs non-stop from May 20 to 22, featuring over 400 piano performances in unusual locations across Milan, such as private homes, courtyards, stations, museums (including GAM Galleria d'Arte Moderna – Villa Reale), schools, libraries, parks, rooftops of Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, and new spaces like Base Milano, Mare culturale urbano, and Santeria Social Club. The social initiative #10 Pianos Street, a suite for ten pianos composed by Sebastiano Cognolato aka Yae, returns for its fourth iteration. Conceived in 2013 as an installation-concert for the festival, it involves restoring old pianos mechanically and acoustically, then reworking them aesthetically with artists. For 2016, five artists—Loredana Di Lillo, Ettore Favini, Enzo Umbaca, vedovamazzei, and Luca Vitone—each reinterpret two pianos. Five of the ten pianos will be sold for charity, and five donated to nonprofit organizations in Milan. The suite includes one piano always available for improvisation during performances by the Scuola Civica di Musica di Corsico Antonia Pozzi ensemble.
