10 landmark museum and cultural center openings of 2019
The year 2019 saw a less polarized geography of major museum and cultural space openings, with new destinations emerging alongside expected New York projects. The National Museum of Qatar by Atelier Jean Nouvel opened in March, featuring white disc forms likened to a 'modern caravanserai'. The Museum of Modern Art in New York underwent a major expansion and rehang by Diller Scofidio + Renfro with Gensler, adding over 4,000 square meters. Germany celebrated the Bauhaus centenary with two new museums: the Bauhaus Museum Dessau by Addenda Architects and the Bauhaus Museum Weimar by Heike Hanada. The Shed, a flexible cultural venue by Diller Scofidio + Renfro with Rockwell Group, opened in Hudson Yards. Ruby City Museum in San Antonio, Texas, designed by Adjaye Associates, features red concrete panels. Barozzi Veiga completed the Musée Cantonal des Beaux-Arts in Lausanne and the Tanzhaus Zürich, and won the commission for the Art Institute of Chicago renovation. David Chipperfield Architects opened the James Simon Galerie on Berlin's Museuminsel. Kengo Kuma completed the Odunpazari Modern Museum in Eskisehir, Turkey. Bjarke Ingels Group opened Twist, a sculptural bridge-gallery in Jevnaker, Norway. Feilden Fowles Architects' The Weston visitor center at Yorkshire Sculpture Park was shortlisted for the RIBA Stirling Prize.
