10 International Architecture Studios Preview 2018 Projects

Mecanoo Architecten's National Kaohsiung Center for the Arts in Taiwan, inspired by banyan trees, will open in October 2018 after nine years of construction. The 225x160m complex houses 6,000 seats across five venues. Heatherwick Studio's Coal Drops Yard in London transforms Victorian coal depots into a covered public space. Kengo Kuma's V&A Museum of Design Dundee, his UK debut, is a £80m cliff-like structure on the Tay waterfront, opening late 2018. Foster + Partners completes Tocumen International Airport expansion in Panama City (Oct 2) and the Comcast Innovation and Technology Center in Philadelphia, the tallest building outside NYC/Chicago. David Chipperfield's new Royal Academy of Arts in London opens May 19, linking Burlington Gardens and Burlington House. BIG's Amager Resource Center in Copenhagen, a ski slope atop a waste-to-energy plant, opens spring 2018; other BIG projects include Faroe Islands Education Centre, The Honeycomb in Albany, and Luna East 126 in NYC. OMA delivers Fondation d'Entreprise Galeries Lafayette in Paris (Mar 10), BLOX in Copenhagen, and Prada Foundation tower in Milan; in NYC, 121 East 22nd Street completes autumn. Ateliers Jean Nouvel finishes European Patent Office in The Hague, two towers in France, Real Dos in Lima, and National Museum of Qatar. Diller Scofidio + Renfro opens High Line's Spur extension in autumn 2018, adding a 1,000 sqm plaza. MVRDV focuses on Amsterdam's Valley complex, with major openings in 2019-2020.
